Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Beta - Unused Sprites & Objects
Special Stage - Extra Life:
Touching this object would give you an extra life. Although it's nowhere to be found in the game, the instruction manual still contains a brief description of the elusive 1-up.
Special Stage - "W" icon:
Some people say that "W" stands for "Warp". Touching this object may have teleported Sonic to a different area in the Special Stage.

Special Stage - ZONE icons:
These objects may have been used to tell you which of the six Special Stages you were in, or which area of a single Special Stage you were in.
Special Stage - elongated Sonic sprites:
Perhaps after touching a Warp object, Sonic is whisked off to a different part of the level and becomes "stretched" with speed.
Green Hill Zone - giant rolling ball:
This object is still selectable in debug mode, although its programming has been removed, so you can't place it anywhere. The art for this object was re-used in the Green Hill Zone boss.
Vanishing Sonic:
Discovered by IceKnight, this appears to be the original way in which Sonic would enter the Special Stage. Instead of jumping through a giant ring, Sonic briefly vanishes when he runs past a lamppost, and then reappears a couple ofseconds later.
Title Screen - "PRESS START BUTTON":
These words appear in the VRAM on the title screen, and can be activated with a single Game Genie code.
Marble Zone - sideways-facing spikes:
This obstacle was removed from the game, perhaps to make Marble Zone a bit easier.
Green Hill Zone - totem pole faces:
These two faces don't appear on any of the totem poles in Green Hill Zone. They also use a different pallete. I've given them Sonic's pallete because it's the only available pallete that works with the sprite.

Robotnik, static, goggles and S monitors:
These monitors all do nothing, and can only be accessed by hacking.
Leaping Sonic:
At the end of each Act, Sonic leaped into the air to celebrate.
Sliding Sonic:
I'm not sure what Sonic is actually doing here. He could be slowing himself down.
Collecting an air bubble:
This is a different version of Sonic breathing in an air bubble in Labyrinth Zone.
Shrinking Sonic:
Perhaps this sprite was used when Sonic got hit by a shrink-ray or something.
Splats:
The mysterious rabbit badnik. Go here for more information.
Robotnik's ship exploding:
This could've been from the ending sequence, where you see Robotnik die.
Green Hill Zone - grass:
Little piece of grass that wasn't used.
Green Hill Zone - spiked log:
The spiked log in the actual game has the spikes and the log separate. This has spikes and log as part of the same sprite.

Labyrinth Zone - Sonic holding his breath:
These sprites are actually loaded into the VRAM, but aren't used. It's obvious what they're for.
Labyrinth Zone - demented Burrobot:
This badnik seems to be drunk.
Labyrinth Zone - goggles:
A special item that lets Sonic breathe underwater. More info here.

Star Light Zone - flashing lamps:
Little bits of scenery that weren't used.
Spring Yard Zone - "Let's go":
Another unused bit of scenery.
Final Zone - the Eggmobile's legs:
The back of the legs are covered up by an extra sprite, so you never normally get to see them.
Final Zone - machinery:
Lumps of scenery not used.Rolling ball and hovering Sonic animations courtesy of ICEknight.
