Sonic 2 - Prototype Enemies

Thanks to ICEknight, we can see how Sonic 2's enemies looked in early stages of development. Digitizer images were found on a disk by Tom Payne (a Digitizer is a Megadrive development tool). Production sketches were drawn by Yasushi Yamaguchi as a guide for programmers and digital artists.

Bee

The prototype version of the Buzzer has an extra frame - just before firing, its body swells. This was removed because of the limited amount of space available in the VRAM. The fireballs are also slightly larger.

Production Sketch

An early idea for the Buzzer was to interact with bridges. The fireball thrown by a Buzzer would set the bridge alight, then the bridge would disappear, allowing Sonic to reach hidden areas of the level.

Translated From Production Sketch:
"Throws a fireball towards Sonic in a parabolic line.
Fireball keeps burning.
BURN.
You can go through the hidden passageway below."

Snail

The snail would have crawled vertically, then fallen as Sonic approached, rolled after him before finally exploding. The production sketch also specifies that the Snail was a Hill Top Zone enemy.

Fish 2

Production Sketch

Emerald Hill Zone's Masher enemy was originally dubbed "Fish 2".

Frog

Production Sketch

The Frog enemy didn't make it past the drawing board.

Bubbler and Mother Bubbler

Production Sketch

Graphics from ROM

The Mother Bubbler enemy flew through the air (or swam through water), dropping sparks.

Translated From Production Sketch:
"Comes floating, dropping sparks behind. Then, Bubbler appears.
Maybe like this...?
It started (What shall I do...)"

Graphics from ROM

When the sparks hit the ground, they would grow into Bubbler enemies, which explode after a short amount of time, leaving a temporary poison gas cloud. Interestingly, the level is named "Chemical Factory Zone" instead of Chemical Plant.

Translated From Production Sketch:
"Sonic is waiting...
It starts to appear.
You can kill it until this moment.
When it grows up.
It explodes like gas.
Gas floats for a while."

Ball

Graphics from ROM

The bouncing ball may have hurt Sonic, or simply repelled him. Sonic says "I don't know what to do".

Banper / Bumper

Production Sketch

Banper is protected by 1 or 2 shields. It was later developed into the Casino night Zone enemy, Crawl, although it was originally planned for Desert Zone (Present) and Rock Zone (Past). For more information on Desert and Rock Zones, go here.

Translated From Production Sketch:
"Sonic 2 Enemy Encyclopaedia
- Banper
Origin: Desert Zone (Present)
It sends you flying when you step on it.
- Old Banper
Origin: Rock Zone (Past)
Characteristics: Same as before (color change)"

Gator

Pallet for Digitizer

Although the Gator was used in Desert Zone concept art, it was probably intended for use in Hidden Palace Zone.

Dinosaur (Triceratops)

Pallet for Digitizer

Similar to the Gator, except they (the Dinosaurs) were correctly used in Hidden Palace concept art.
