Sonic 2 Beta ROM - Unused Sprites & Objects

Objects & graphics that appear in the beta during normal gameplay, but don't appear in the final version:

Sonic balancing:
Different to the balancing animation in the final version. It's very simlar to the animation used in Sonic 1.

Sonic running:
Different running animation.

Snail enemy - Green Hill Zone:
Moves back and forth at a fair pace. A bit like the Motobug from Sonic 1.

Bat enemy - Hidden Palace Zone:
Hangs from the ceiling and swoops down. Difficult to avoid if you're not expecting it.

Dinosaur enemy - Hidden Palace Zone:
Walks back and forth very slowly.

Ball - Oil Ocean Zone:
A ball that comes out of the ground when you approach it, or when a switch is pressed.

Parallelogram - Metropolis Zone:
Block that slides around and crushes Sonic.

Objects that appear in the beta only in debug mode, and don't appear in the final version:

Continue post:
Serves the same purpose as Starposts in the final version. They flash red when you touch one.

Lava balls - Hill Top Zone:
A bubble appears, then spits out two fireballs that move outwards in two symmetrical arcs.

Objects & graphics that can only be accessed by hacking:

Sonic pulling:
This was never implemented because it's unnecessary since you can already push things.

Sonic balancing:
Animation not used. The Sonic 1 - style balancing is used instead (see above).

Sonic tired:
Probably a waiting animation that wasn't used.

Sonic running fast:
Unused animation, where Sonic leans forward as he runs, probably meant for when he runs "very fast".

Tails balancing:
Not used. Instead, Tails just stands on the edge of a platform normally, except his tails disappear.

Tails flying:
Tails doesn't fly in the beta.

Tails stopping:
Not used.

Bonus points:
Originally in Sonic 1, these were reprogrammed to be used in Sonic 2, but never actually got used.

Flaming bridge - Green Hill Zone:
When the Buzzer enemy dropped its fireball onto a bridge, the bridge would burn and disappear, opening a new area for Sonic. This feature was never actually implemented.

Mother Bubbler - Chemical Plant Zone:
Weird fish thing, swims through the water and drops sparks. The sparks then turn into:

Bubbler - Chemical Plant Zone:
Sparks dropped by the Mother Bubbler turn into exploding faces.

Boss - Chemical Plant Zone:
The unused CPZ boss has an animation where the blue stuff falls on Robotnik's head.

Background holes - Hidden Palace Zone:
This was going to be part of the background, but was removed before the beta version. You can see it used in this screenshot:

Pirhana enemy - Hidden Palace Zone:
Enemy that jumps out of the water as you go past. All the object programming is intact, unlike many of the objects listed here.

Triceratops enemy - Hidden Palace Zone:
Moves along the ground and speeds up when you go near it. This has also been fully programmed.

Gator enemy - Hidden Palace Zone:
Behaves exactly like the triceratops.

Sandcrab / Crawl enemy - Casino Night Zone:
Different design for the Crawl enemy. The pallet is from the final version CNZ (not the pink beta CNZ). The first two frames show how the enemy emerged from the ground.

Octus enemy - Oil Ocean Zone:
Spits a fireball at you, then flies away. In the final version, the Octus doesn't fly.

Aquis enemy - Oil Ocean Zone:
There are two versions of the Aquis in the beta. One with wings, and one with a rocket pack. The rocket pack version is a different colour.

Screws - Metropolis Zone (?):
Things that may hurt Sonic, or could just be harmless pieces of scenery.

Bouncing ball - Metropolis Zone (?):
This probably belongs in Metropolis Zone, since it looks best with that pallet.

Spring monitor:
Doesn't do anything when you smash it. Maybe it was supposed to make Sonic jump higher.

Leftover graphics from Chiki Chiki Boys:

The cartridge Sonic 2 Beta originally came from had been previously used to store another game, Chiki Chiki Boys. When Sonic 2 was written to the cartridge, some portions of the ROM chip remained untouched, leaving fragments of Chiki Chiki Boys intact. The Sonic 2 Beta cartridge was later copied, distributed as a bootleg game, which was dumped as a ROM and spread all over the internet.

Torch:
A lot people used to think this came from the semi-mythical Desert Zone. Here's where it really came from:

Splash:
A splash of water, originally thought to be a rock falling in water, is actually this waterfall:
