The Sonic 2 Beta ROM is now widely available on the internet. The main difference between Sonic 2 and Sonic 2 Beta is the choice of levels. Several Zones are missing, but there are a couple of Zones not found in the final version of the game. Namely, Hidden Palace Zone and Wood Zone. Another key difference is that Tails can lose rings on your behalf. How kind of him.

Review:

Obviously Sonic 2 Beta isn't very playable, due to it being an unfinished game. Some levels (eg. Metropolis Zone) don't even have an end, while others can't be completed due to impassable obstacles. But that's not the point. There is just one thing that makes this game a must-have; Hidden Palace Zone. Only one Act is playable, and it's only half-finished, but it looks good and plays quite well too. Hidden Palace Zone is equally as good as many of the levels that made it into the final release of Sonic 2. Rating: 5/10
