This is a completely different special stage (or bonus stage). It's similar
to the bonus stage from Chaotix, where the character falls through bumpers and
rings.
Sonic & Tails 2 - Strikedash
In the final version, the strikedash (hold up & press jump) involves Sonic
"sparkling" with energy. The beta version had Sonic bursting into
flames.
